Government approves Langarth land purchase

Cornwall Council said a Compulsory Purchase Order for the project had been approved by the government

Plans for a new town near Truro have taken a step forward after an order to purchase land for the site was approved.

Cornwall Council said the government had approved a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) for land within the Langarth Garden Village development, which has been earmarked for 3,550 homes over a 25-year period.

The council said it already owned the majority of the land needed for the scheme, but needed the CPO for a section of land it "had not been able to acquire by agreement".

The council said the CPO was a "major milestone" for the project and the first 150 homes were due to be built by 2027.

The council said the CPO covers 175 hectares and is located on the western edge of Truro, near its main facilities including the county's main hospital.

The decision was made by an inspector appointment on behalf of the housing, communities and local government secretary followed a one-day public inquiry, the council added.

Along with the homes, the project includes two primary schools, an energy centre, parks, play areas and an extension to the Langarth park and ride site.

The development also includes the Langarth Sports Hub, a 3,000-capacity stadium that was completed at the end of July.
