A murder investigation has been launched after a man who became trapped in a burning building died, police have said.

The man in his 40s was rescued from a fire at a property on Dumbarton Green in Wigan on Wednesday, Greater Manchester Police said.

He was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries where he later died.

A 48-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and causing grievous bodily harm with the incidents being treated as a suspected arson attack, the force said.

Det Ch Insp Nicola McCulloch said: "We believe this to be an isolated incident with no wider threat to the public.

"We are still in the early stages of our investigation, but at this time we suspect this is an arson attack resulting in the tragic death of a man."

She urged anyone with information or who was in the Dumbarton Green area on Tuesday or Wednesday to contact the force.
