Firefighters have rescued six puppies from a burning flat.

The fire started in the kitchen of the first floor flat in Newton and St Leonard's, Exeter, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said.

The occupier of the flat alerted the fire control and told them there were seven dogs inside.

Crews managed to find and rescue the puppies and their mother who are all alive and well.

Crews in two fire engines from Danes Castle and Middlemoor had entered the flat with breathing apparatus.

The kitchen was badly damaged by the fire, but the rest of the flat only suffered smoke damage after the alert at 13:52 GMT on Tuesday.

Two men, who were in the flat at the time of the fire, were treated for minor smoke inhalation by paramedics.

The cause of the fire was accidental, the fire service said.
