Four people were arrested at the Tees-Wear derby on Sunday, police said.

The match saw Sunderland fight back to earn a draw against Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.

Cleveland Police made four arrests on suspicion of public order offences and assaulting an emergency worker.

One man was also ordered to leave the area under dispersal order powers, but the vast majority of fans behaved responsibly, the force said.

Cleveland Police had previously said there would be a large presence in and around the Middlesbrough town centre area, with Northumbria Police Mounted Section officers, British Transport Police, Durham Constabulary and volunteers from Cleveland Special Constabulary providing support.

Match commander T/Supt Paul Richardson thanked both clubs and partners for their co-operation.

He said: “Working with both clubs, we wanted to ensure an enjoyable day for those coming into Middlesbrough to watch the match, and minimise disruption to those within the town who were not necessarily coming into Middlesbrough for the football.

“Today’s game resulted in four arrests with those people now being dealt with appropriately.

"Incidents were dealt with swiftly so that further disorder could be prevented."

More than 32,000 tickets had been sold, with Sunderland bringing 2,000 supporters, Middlesbrough FC said.
