Police have arrested two burglary suspects after officers tracked them down using a shoe left at the scene.

A 43-year-old man and a 45-year-old woman from Macclesfield were held after a reported burglary at a Tesco petrol station in the town at about 02:35 BST.

They were traced by a police dog from the scent of a shoe that had been abandoned at the scene on Hibel Road.

Insp Richard Haque said there was no "fairy tale" ending for the suspects, who "did not get to go the ball last night" and were instead held in police custody.

The pair were both arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary and criminal damage.

Insp Haque said he hoped the arrests gave "reassurance to local residents and businesses".
