A coroner has opened an inquest into the death of a 16-year-old school leaver who drowned after getting into difficulty while swimming with his friends.

The body of Dishone Lloyd was found the day after he was reported missing at Burnside Lakes, in Cherry Hinton, Cambridge, on 12 August 2024.

At the time of his death the 16-year-old had just completed his GCSEs at Mark Hall Academy in Harlow, Essex.

Coroner Caroline Jones, who opened the inquest, adjourned the case until the week of 24 February.

Cambridgeshire Police said Mr Lloyd had been swimming with friends on the hottest day of the year.

The force said it believed the 16-year-old had climbed over a high fence to access the lake before he got into trouble while in the water.

Emergency workers found his body at about 13:00 BST on 13 August, having been searching for him since the previous evening. His death was confirmed at 14:44 that day.

Tributes from Mr Lloyd's school had described him as a "cherished member of our family and community", who "brought positivity and warmth to those who knew him".

Following the incident, people living near the lakes told the BBC that previous safety concerns had not been acted upon.
