Promenade cafe on track to open next month

A cafe being built on a town's promenade is on track to open by next month.

The shell of the building in Maryport, Cumbria, is taking shape and Cumberland Council confirmed it will open in May.

It is part of a £12m investment, funded by the government, to regenerate the coastal town.

A council spokesman said: "We are aiming to make an announcement about the operator of the cafe in the next few weeks once the lease has been finalised."

The cafe is being built next to a new skatepark, part of the same scheme.

Other projects already delivered include the new play area Shiver Me Timbers, by the marina, renovations to the Maryport Activity Centre and the opening of the Shipping Brow Gallery.

An events area is being created in front of Maryport marina and renovations are ongoing at Christ Church, which will become the home of the Maritime Museum, and the old Carleton Cinema which is being turned into a arts and music venue.
