A woman who raised thousands of pounds during the Covid pandemic has celebrated her 108th birthday - and received a personalised message from her favourite TV presenter.

Joan Willett was born in St Leonards-on-Sea in 1916 during the First World War and has lived in the town ever since.

She received a personal message from TV presenter Chris Packham who presents her favourite show Springwatch.

Ms Willett raised £70,000 for the British Heart Foundation during lockdown by walking 17 miles up and down a hill outside her care home.

The former teacher still walks around the garden of her care home and gets involved with the activities on offer.

“I’m feeling rather excited because everyone is being so kind but then they always are,” she said.

“The fact I’ve lived so long is not just down to me but also the people I’ve lived with."

She added: “I have had a very happy life. I think my secret to a happy healthy life is taking an interest in all that goes on around me and the people.

“I don’t usually feel 108 but occasionally I feel my age and that it has caught up with me. I can’t do some of the things I used to do but I still have a wonderful time.”

Her carer Pauline Glenet said she was a “role model” to everyone at Old Hastings House care home.

She said: “She’s like Old Hastings House’s mascot. She is an incredible lady and we all absolutely admire her."

Ms Willett was awarded the British Empire Medal last year in recognition of her service to the local community.
