Views sought on adult ADHD prescriptions

There is "inordinate pressure" on the island's consultant psychiatrist, says a panel chair

People in Jersey are being urged to share their experiences in a review of prescriptions for adult ADHD medication.

The review by the Health and Social Security Scrutiny Panel follows concerns about pressure on the island's sole consultant psychiatrist in making repeat prescriptions.

This is resulting in them spending "an extraordinary amount of their time just doing repeat prescriptions", the panel was told by the director of mental health and adult social care in March.

The panel will also be questioning the minister for health and social services and other experts and organisations, officials said.

ADHD is a condition that affects people's behaviour.

It can make them seem restless, and they may have trouble concentrating and can act on impulse.

Deputy Louise Doublet, chair of the panel, said: "In other jurisdictions, once an individual has been assessed by a specialist, their repeat prescriptions can be managed by their GP.

"Our current system is putting an inordinate pressure on the one consultant psychiatrist we have available in Jersey and the panel’s concern is that this isn’t only impacting staff, but also those who need regular ADHD care.

"We welcome anyone who has experiences to share on this issue to get in contact with us."
