New net zero carbon rental homes have been completed in Surrey, a council said.

Tandridge District Council said the homes in Orrick Court in Caterham on the Hill would be affordable rental properties for those currently on the council's housing register.

The homes have energy-saving lights, air source heat pumps and solar panels, the council said.

Jeremy Pursehouse, chairman of the council's housing committee, said: "These homes represent our commitment to reducing carbon emissions and supporting sustainable living.”

Liam Beadle, director at Arkay Building Services, said: “We have enjoyed working with Tandridge District Council and are proud to deliver net zero carbon homes, which will offer environmental sustainability.”

Caterham on the Hill Parish Council had proposed that the new homes should be named after the late John Orrick, a former parish, district and county councillor.

John Orrick’s widow Anne Orrick said: “Our family is honoured to have these homes named after him and we look forward to seeing the positive impact they will have on our community."
