A murder inquiry has been launched after the death of a man in South Lanarkshire.

Police said they were called to a report of two injured men in the Braeside Crescent area of Kirkmuirhill, near Lanark, in the early hours of Wednesday.

A 30-year-old man - named as Scott Boyd - was pronounced dead at the scene, and following a post mortem examination, his death is being treated as murder. A 35-year-old man was taken to Wishaw General Hospital for treatment and has since been released.

Forensic officers were still at the scene on Friday.

Police have urged anyone with information to submit it via an online portal, external.

Police believe it was an isolated incident with no threat posed to the wider public.

Officers are looking through CCTV and carrying out door-to-door inquiries as part of what police say is an "extensive" investigation.

Det Ch Insp Bob Williamson, from the major investigation team, said: "Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Mr Boyd at this very difficult time. We are providing them with support as our investigation continues.

"A team of detectives are working alongside officers from the local division to trace whoever is responsible as soon as possible."

The senior officer added that any information may be vital to the case, "no matter how small it may seem".

All local road closures in the area have now been lifted.
