Town centre transformed by £16m upgrades
- Published
Extensive works to transform a town centre into a more appealing place for pedestrians is almost complete.
Footpaths on several streets have been widened and drainage has been upgraded to tackle flooding in parts of Trowbridge.
The finishing touches of the £16m year-long project will be carried out over the next six weeks, with benches and planters being installed, Wiltshire Council said.
Councillor Nick Holder, cabinet member for highways, said mobility scooter users and pedestrians have already reported "significant improvement in accessibility".
Church Street, Castle Street, Manvers Street, Fore Street, and Wicker Hill have all been upgraded.
"As well as the visible improvements on Manvers Street and Wicker Hill, we've addressed long-standing issues like drainage and surfacing, ensuring long-term resilience," Mr Holder said.
Utility companies have also used the opportunity to carry out essential repairs, "reducing potential future disruptions", he added.
"We appreciate the works have caused some disruption to local businesses and would like to thank them for their patience and understanding during this time," Mr Holder said.
Meanwhile, the council's planned work to revamp Roundstone Street and Hilperton Road, based in east Trowbridge, will begin in February and end in March 2026.
