A 14-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of drug-driving after police tracked down a stolen car.

Nottinghamshire Police said a man reported his blue Hyundai i20 had been taken from outside his home in Ekowe Street, New Basford, shortly before 15:00 GMT on Sunday.

About 40 minutes later, police found the car and it was stopped using a stinger before four boys wearing balaclavas ran off but were caught.

Three of the teenage boys were released without charge.

'Opportunist theft'

Police said the 14-year-old boy tested positive for cannabis and was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, drug-driving, dangerous driving, failing to stop, driving without a licence and driving without insurance.

He has been bailed pending the results of a blood sample.

The car owner told officers he had mistakenly left a set of keys in his front door, which had been used to steal his Hyundai, said officers.

The car was spotted by an officer in a police car being driven towards Kimberley and was subsequently stopped using a stinger following a short pursuit along the A610.

PC Dan Bird said: "This was an opportunist theft of a vehicle and the consequences could have been catastrophic."
