A Surrey community centre forced to close after it was left without power or a fire alarm system is due to reopen later this month after coming under council control.

All events at the Maybury Centre in Woking were suspended in July by the borough council after the facility had its electricity supply terminated and meter removed.

Running of the centre, which provides facilities for education, health, welfare, business and recreation, has been taken over by the council from the Maybury Centre Trust.

Councillor Steve Greentree, portfolio holder for community, said that "a number of health and safety checks will need to be undertaken" before the centre can reopen.

"To thank all our regular users for their patience and understanding during the temporary closure, booking fees will remain unchanged until April 2026," Mr Greentree said.

The centre will initially operate with an adjusted timetable as part of a phased reopening, he added.

Organisations will be given the opportunity to express an interest in managing the centre when the council includes it a community asset transfer process planned for early 2026.

The Maybury Centre Trust took over centre operations in June as part of the council's asset transfer policy to cut costs.

The Maybury Centre Trust has been contacted for comment.
