Man arrested after one dead and four hurt in crash

Emergency services were called to the scene just after 07:00 GMT on Monday

A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a man in his 30s died in a crash involving four cars and a lorry between Telford and Shrewsbury.

Police, fire crews and ambulances were called to the westbound carriageway of the A5 near Upton Magna, on Monday, shortly after 07:00 GMT.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said members of the public and firefighters were administering CPR to a car passenger before paramedics arrived.

However, he was confirmed dead a short time later.

A second man, a passenger from the same vehicle, was taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital but his injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

The driver of that car and a third passenger were assessed for minor injuries, and were taken to the Princess Royal Hospital, in Telford.

A man, who was the driver of a second car, suffered potentially serious injuries, and was transported to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

The road was closed by police just after 07:00 from the junction 7 slip road, outside Wellington.

The closure caused long delays and queuing traffic.

A diversion was put in place but all lanes later reopened and traffic returned to normal, according to traffic data company Inrix.
