Heritage sites will open their doors for free

Visitors to Tattershall Castle will be able to explore its architecture for free during the heritage open days

Free events designed to celebrate Lincolnshire's history and culture will be held across the county.

The open days will take place from 12 to 21 September, including in Lincoln, Sleaford and Boston.

Visitors will be able to explore what is said to be England's oldest medieval friary, a Victorian cemetery and the grammar school of Sir Isaac Newton, with the events being run by local volunteers and organisations.

This year's theme for the Heritage Open Days, which are held every September across the country, is Architecture: Buildings, Bridges and Beehives.

Some of the highlights include:

• Learn about RAF Cranwell and the building of College Hall at Cranwell Aviation Heritage Museum in Sleaford

• Free entry to the National Trust Tattershall Castle to explore its architecture

• Belton Community Festival at the Belton Estate, with several activities

• Hard Hat Tour of Greyfriars in Lincoln, where visitors can explore what is said to be the only remaining building of England's oldest medieval friary

• Explore Boston's historical Victorian cemetery

• Visit the old Tudor grammar school in Grantham, attended by Sir Isaac Newton, who was born in Woolsthorpe

• See behind the scenes at the Broadbent Theatre in Wickenby, named after the parents of Oscar-winning actor Jim Broadbent

• Toy Collectors Fair at Lincolnshire Showground
