A woman has been arrested following the "suspicious death" of a man in County Down.

Police say they received a report at 12:45 BST on Saturday, that a man, aged in his 40s, had sustained a serious injury in the Fisher Park area of Newry.

In an update on Sunday evening, police said detectives have been granted a 36 hour extension by a court to detain a 50-year-old woman arrested in connection with the man's death.

Cordons remain in place within the Fisher Park area as officers conduct further enquiries.

On Saturday, a spokesperson for the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said: "Emergency services attended, and the man received medical treatment at the scene before being taken to hospital. Sadly, he later died from his injuries.

"Our investigation is at an early stage and we are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the man's death."
