Rail delays ongoing day after three-car crash fire

Disruption has continued on West Midlands rail lines because of signalling problems following a three-vehicle crash under a railway bridge on Saturday.

The collision, which sparked a fire on Manor Road in Ettingshall, Wolverhampton, damaged signalling equipment, resulting in major disruption across the network.

Four people, including two young children, were taken to hospital after the crash and a man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and failing to stop.

National Rail said delays and cancellations between Birmingham New Street and Wolverhampton railway stations were expected to last until about 21:00 BST.

It added on Sunday, external the issue was also affecting Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, London Northwestern Railway and Transport for Wales services.

Rail replacement buses are running between Wolverhampton, Shrewsbury and Crewe, with tickets also valid on West Midlands Metro and National Express West Midlands bus routes.

West Midlands Railway, external posted on X to say a smaller number of services were running between Birmingham New Street and Shrewsbury due to lines being tested.

In a statement on Sunday, West Midlands Police said a 23-year-old man had been arrested.

He was taken to hospital on Saturday but is currently in police custody for questioning.

"Thankfully no-one sustained life-threatening injuries," the statement added.
