A man was hit on the back of the head with a metal pole and left with slash wounds after a serious assault, police said.

He was walking towards McDonald's on a side street next to Sandy Lane, by the A141 in Bushey, at about 03:00 BST on Tuesday when he was approached by a vehicle with no lights on, Hertfordshire Police said.

The force said four men got out and he was hit with the pole, causing him to fall to the ground where he was struck again and his face and hands injured.

Police said he then suffered slash wounds to his stomach and chest, "as one the offenders may have been carrying a knife".

Police said two of the men in the car were described by police as black and about 5ft 10in (1.78m) tall.

One of the men was white and the other was of mixed ethnic origin.

All were wearing snoods.

Police appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
