Asylum hotel fire accused appears in court

A man has appeared in court charged with trying to set fire to a hotel which was housing asylum seekers in Rotherham.
Levi Fishlock, 31, of Sheffield Road, Barnsley, is accused of throwing missiles and pushing a flaming bin towards the hotel during disorder on Sunday.
Prosecutors said he was seen by police shouting racist phrases, throwing paving slabs towards the hotel and trying to push over vehicles.
He did not plead to the charges of arson with intent to endanger life and violent disorder, and his case was sent to Sheffield Crown Court for a hearing on 20 August.
In total, 11 people have now appeared in court charged with offences relating to the violence.
More than 50 police officers were injured when unrest broke out at the Holiday Inn Express in Manvers, a hotel believed to have been housing around 200 asylum seekers.
Mr Fishlock was identified by officers as he was wearing a "distinctive" England football shirt and man bag, and was alleged to have thrown wood onto a bin fire against the side of the hotel, Sheffield Magistrates' Court heard.
Mr Fishlock was arrested on 7 August, two days after the hotel violence took place and was remanded into custody, prosecuting barrister Simon Walton said.
Also appearing at the same court was 18-year-old Kenzie Roughley, of Barnsley Road, Pontefract.
He yawned after being brought into the dock and pleaded guilty to violent disorder.
He is alleged to have "rocked" a police CCTV van, with the operator inside "fearing for his life" before trying to drive away, Mr Walton said.
He was remanded into custody ahead of a sentencing hearing at Sheffield Crown Court on Friday.
A 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named because of his young age, pleaded guilty to a charge of violent disorder.
He is alleged to have been captured on bodyworn video cameras throwing bottles towards officers and their dogs.
He was arrested on Wednesday and granted bail with conditions by District Judge James Gould. Prosecution barrister Mr Walton said he had been instructed to appeal bail, with the youth being remanded into custody.
A date for sentencing was set for Barnsley Youth Court on 20 August, the court was told.
Alfie Conway, 19, of Park Avenue, Pontefract, also appeared at Sheffield Magistrates' Court charged with violent disorder.
Wearing a high-vis T-shirt and on the verge of tears throughout the hearing, the bricklaying apprentice entered no plea.
He was said to have been recognised by a police officer at the scene, Mr Walton said.
He was then said to have "appeared shocked and nervous".
Mr Conway was accused of throwing items including bricks and stones at officers. A crown court date was set of 20 August with him being remanded into custody.
He blew a kiss towards his family, who sat at the back of the courtroom.
