A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after an elderly man was stabbed and left with serious injuries.

The attack took place on Edge Hall Road in Orrell, Wigan, at about 16:00 BST on Thursday.

The victim, aged in his 70s, was taken to hospital and the 18-year-old suspect was later arrested after what police described as an "extensive" investigation.

Ch Insp Glen Rees, of Greater Manchester Police, said he was a "key suspect" but the force was trying to track down "all those responsible".

'Shock'

“We understand the shock and concern this incident will raise in the community," he said.

Ch Insp Rees also thanked passers-by who helped police treat the man.

Witnesses or anyone with information has been urged to contact police.
