A man has been given a life sentence for the murder of a grandfather who died two days after an assault at a house in Slough.

Tomasz Kopec, 46, was found by Thames Valley Police officers critically injured inside the property on Grant Avenue on 25 April.

Jakub Nowicki, 40, of Ascot Road, Maidenhead, was sentenced to a minimum of 18 years and five months in prison following a trial at Reading Crown Court.

Mr Kopec's family previously described him as a "guiding light" who was "always present, always supportive and always ready with a smile or a word of encouragement".

Thames Valley Police said it was called to the incident at 06:45 BST on 25 April following reports of a domestic assault.

Mr Kopec was discovered on the living room floor with severe head injuries and surrounded by broken furniture. He was taken to hospital but died two days later.

Nowicki was also sentenced to 18-months for assault on a 34-year-old woman at the house and a one-month sentence for criminal damage, all to run concurrently.

Det Insp Nick Hind, senior investigating officer, said: "The murder of Tomasz Kopec has been a devastating loss for his family, and our thoughts remain with them and his friends.

"Those family members present in court have displayed admirable composure and dignity, while Nowicki has never accepted responsibility for his brutal and sustained attack, nor shown any remorse."
