'Stunt track' drivers prompt crackdown plan
- Published
Nuisance drivers using part of a Derbyshire town as a "stunt track" have prompted police and the council to take action.
Erewash Borough Council said "idiots" had been "roaring up and down" Chalons Way in Ilkeston as well as performing "doughnuts" at roundabouts.
The authority and Derbyshire Police have proposed a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) which would give officers more power to impose on-the-spot fines and break up gatherings.
A public consultation on the plan is due to end on 1 January.
Deputy council leader Becca Everett said: "The PSPO gives the police and council officers additional powers to clamp down – not only on participants in the vehicles but spectators and those who organise such events."
Insp Matt Ladd, from Erewash's local policing unit, said: "We know the impact this behaviour is having on our local communities, and we welcome the move by the council to launch this consultation.
"We urge local residents and anyone impacted by this to show their support."
