Cars allowed in high street decades after closure

High Street, in Calne, will reopen to one-way traffic on Monday

A town's high street will reopen to traffic for the first time in decades.

From Monday, motorists will be able to drive one way along High Street in Calne, from Wood Street to Curzon Street.

Wiltshire Council said it hopes the 18-month trial will improve traffic flow and air quality.

"I'd encourage residents to share their feedback on the changes, as this will help us to refine or adapt the scheme if necessary," said the council's cabinet member for highways Nick Holder.

"Our aim for this trial, which will last for up to 18 months, is to improve the air quality in Calne and also help to relieve some of the traffic issues in the town."

Wiltshire Council has installed a tarmac road

From Monday, traffic will flow south from Wood Street along High Street, turning left on to Curzon Street, while vehicles exiting High Street must turn left.

Westbound traffic from Wood Street on to The Square must turn right at the mini-roundabout on Curzon Street and continue along the A4.

Temporary barriers have been installed along the road to separate cars and pedestrians, while disabled parking has been moved to Wood Street. Tree planters have also been relocated.

The council has said it will evaluate the impact of the scheme and gather feedback before deciding whether it will become permanent.
