A speeding driver was travelling on the wrong side of the road before he hit and killed a motorcyclist, police have said.

Father-of-two Vincent Lawrence, 48, was killed on 19 July 2023 when his Honda motorbike was struck by a Vauxhall Astra being driven by Kieran Williams in Netherton, said Merseyside Police.

Williams, 24, of Netherton, admitted causing death by dangerous driving.

At a Liverpool Crown Court, Williams was jailed for eight years and eight months. He will be banned from driving for five years when he is released, and will have to complete an extended driving test to regain his licence.

Police said Williams travelled the wrong way around a mini roundabout and pedestrian crossing island before the crash.

In contrast, Kirkby man Mr Lawrence had been riding his motorbike responsibly and legally.

After his death, Mr Lawrence's family said he had been "tragically taken too soon" and was "sadly missed by his father, brother, sisters, nephews, nieces and his two beautiful sons".

"Love you forever," their statement added.

Det Sgt Andy Roper said Merseyside Police was "committed to the prevention of serious injury and road death" and appealed for people to come forward if they knew of any drivers breaking the law.

"This is something that we must all do in partnership. Communities can also take a stand and help us to make the roads safer," he added.
