Questions raised on impact of golf course homes plan

The golf course and office buildings could make way for a new community

More than 100 people attended a public consultation on plans to build up to 800 homes on a golf course and office park in Leicestershire.

Blaby District Council and Santander want to build a new community, Hayes Gardens, on a 141-acre (57 hectare) to the east of Enderby.

Enderby Golf Course, which is primarily council-owned, could be closed to make way for the development, which would also sit on unused parts of Santander’s Carlton Park office complex.

A first public consultation at Enderby Civic Centre in May was well attended, with questions raised on the development’s impact on schools, roads and health facilities.

A consortium spokesperson said “We have been really pleased with the level of engagement so far on the proposals for Hayes Gardens.

“More than 100 people attended the first public drop-in event, and more than 300 have already provided valuable feedback through various channels.

“We had some constructive conversations at our first event with local residents and community groups on a range of topics and would like to thank everyone who took the time to attend.

“We look forward to speaking to the local community again at our forthcoming events and would invite anyone interested in the plans to come along.”

Land used as offices and a golf course are earmarked as a development site.

The council says the scheme could help it meet its government-set target to find land for 687 homes annually up to 2036

But in order to progress, Hayes Gardens needs to be allocated for development in Blaby’s Local Plan.

If included, a planning process including a formal public consultation will need to be completed.

The next public drop-in takes place on Tuesday from 14:00 to 19:00 BST at Blaby District Council offices, with a session from 10:00 to 15:00 at Enderby Leisure Centre on Saturday 15 June to follow.
