A man has been accused of fraud after an elderly man was allegedly scammed out of £3,000 by someone pretending to be a police officer.

The 36-year-old, from Holsworthy Square, London, has been charged with two counts of fraud by false representation.

It came after a man in his 80s, from Rugby, Warwickshire, was called on 29 August by someone who claimed to be an officer from the Metropolitan Police, Warwickshire Police said.

It is alleged that the victim then handed the cash over to a courier under false pretences, a force spokesperson added.

A second call of a similar nature is also alleged to have been made a day later to the victim, who subsequently contacted the police.

The man charged is due to appear at Warwick Crown Court on 3 October.
