The general public could be able hire a16th Century castle for overnight stays, weddings and other events if a planning application is approved.

John Lewis Partnership has operated Brownsea Castle in Dorset as a private hotel since 1963, opening it for employees and their families and friends.

The retailer sent its request to Dorset Council which will make the site available to the wider community for between 10 to 20 events a year.

The castle, built by Henry VIII between 1545 and 1547 is on the National Trust owned Brownsea Island, in Poole Harbour.

The John Lewis Partnership runs its hotel season at Brownsea Castle from the end of January up to the last week before Christmas each year.

Events at the castle tend to last one day and night with a maximum capacity of 75 guests, with 50 of them able to stay overnight.

John Lewis hopes to use these new events to generate "commercial revenue" which would allow it to continue to run Brownsea Castle as a private and subsidised hotel for its employees.

A John Lewis Partnership spokesperson said: “Brownsea Castle is a beautiful, picturesque setting, available for our partners to enjoy.

"We’re exploring options for a small number of people outside our partnership to enjoy the benefits of the scenic location to celebrate their special occasions, such as weddings.”
