Traffic restrictions have been put in place to ease problems caused by the temporary closure of a major A-road between Bath and Frome.

Diversions have been in place on a 20-mile stretch of the A36 Warminster Road between Limpley Stoke in Wiltshire, and Monkton Combe in Somerset to allow essential repair work to stabilise the embankment.

Since the closure there has been an increase in traffic on the narrow, minor roads through Limpley Stoke and Bradford-on-Avon.

The changes to the road network, which have been introduced for the duration of the roadworks, include 20mph speed limits on surrounding, minor roads.

Leader of Wiltshire Council, Richard Clewer, said: “We know that the closure of the A36 is causing traffic issues through Limpley Stoke and Bradford on Avon, and that’s why we’re working with both National Highways and BANES (Bath and North East Somerset Council) on these changes to the local road network to improve the situation.

“However, it’s important to note that these solutions will not be perfect, and there still will be some disruption for the local people, as is the nature of any large-scale highways project."

The work on the A36 is due to be completed in spring 2025.
