Victorian pier to close for safety repairs

A Grade II listed pier is set to close for safety works next month.
The repairs to Saltburn Pier, in Redcar and Cleveland, are expected to cost £22,000 and follow routine inspections.
More than 100 decking boards will be replaced and redundant lighting and cabling will be removed from the underside of the deck.
A Redcar and Cleveland Council cabinet report said not carrying out the works would contribute to the pier's deterioration and increase the health and safety risk to visitors.
A council spokesperson said the repairs were expected to take place next month, subject to weather conditions.
He said: "The closure of the pier will be kept to a minimum and it is hoped there will be restricted access when safe to do so.
"The repairs are expected to take three weeks to complete, weather permitting."
The Victorian iron pier, which celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2019, underwent major restoration work in 1978 and 2000.
A separate £600,000 scheme financed by the Tees Valley Combined Authority is also taking place at Saltburn over the coming months.
This includes replacing railings on the Lower Promenade and Marine Parade and changes to bus stops and pedestrian crossing at the bottom of Saltburn Bank, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.
