A man and a woman have been charged with assault after a baby boy was found in a critical condition.

The child was found unresponsive at a house in Wirral at about midday on Sunday, Merseyside Police said.

A 36-year-old man and a woman, 33, have both been charged with causing grievous bodily harm and wounding with intent.

They appeared before magistrates earlier and have been remanded in custody.

Officers were called to the house after reports raising concerns about the child's welfare.

The baby was rushed to hospital after his injuries were assessed at the scene and his condition was described as critical, the force said.

The defendants are due to appear at Liverpool Crown Court on 23 December.
