Police have enacted extra stop-and-search powers following a number of violent incidents in a town.

Bedfordshire Police said a Section 60 order, which allows for heightened powers, was imposed in Luton on Sunday night following three incidents involving knives in the Marsh Farm area.

The force said the aim of the order was the "keep the public safe" and "deter any further offences".

The order is in effect until 08:00 on Monday but may be extended, the force said.

The three incidents happened in Flint Close, Denham Close, and Sylam Close.

The force said: "Although this is a far-reaching power, officers have been fully briefed on the description of those involved in these incidents and will utilise the powers proportionately and in a targeted way to deliver wider public safety."

The Section 60 Order applies to the following areas:

• Bramingham Road

• Wauluds Bank Drive

• Henge Way

• Hampshire Way

• Olympic Close

• Northwell Drive

• Brompton Close and all areas within
