A man who poured petrol over another man before setting him alight, as well as setting fire to a property, has been jailed for life.

Ryan Tomney, 29, of Normandy Road in Cleethorpes, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent and arson with intent to endanger life. He was earlier found not guilty of attempted murder.

The incidents took place in Grimsby during the early hours of Sunday 24 April 2022. He was sentenced at Hull Crown Court on Tuesday and is expected to serve a minimum of eight years.

Det Con Scott Jackson said: "Tomney is a violent individual who attended the flat with one motive – to cause significant harm."

Tomney set fire to a flat in Heneage Road, Grimsby, while two people were inside.

He then set a car alight, which was destroyed in the process.

The two people inside the flat managed to get out but Tomney then chased one man down the street while dousing flammable liquid at him and setting him alight.

The man suffered significant burn injuries to his body and was transported to a specialist burns unit for treatment to his serious injuries.

After Tomney was identified from CCTV, he took to the roof of his address, causing substantial damage to a number of properties after throwing tiles and setting multiple fires.

Det Con Jackson added: "The value of damage caused to the flat at St Luke's Court totalled over £15,000, but that is nothing compared to the suffering caused to the man injured in the incident.

"Tomney was completely reckless and I am reassured that he is now behind bars and no longer poses a risk to the wider community."
