Repairs to a storm-damaged pier will continue into next year after a new dome was fitted on its lighthouse.

South Pier Lighthouse in South Shields had its roof ripped off during Storm Babet in 2023.

Port of Tyne said the installation of a new dome was "a milestone moment", with works on the pier and lighthouse "well under way".

Lost and damaged sections of the parapet will also be rebuilt as part of the repairs.

The new dome was fitted last Thursday.

A Port of Tyne spokesperson said: "We know the pier means a lot to the public and we’re committed to restoring it to its former glory.

"However until the restoration works are complete, for the safety of the public and contractors working on the sites the piers are required to remain closed."

The spokesperson said works would continue into next year.
