All you need to know as famous airshow returns

Displays are set to take place in Clacton-on-Sea across Thursday and Friday

Flight fans are expected to turn out in force during the return of a seaside town's famous airshow.

Clacton Classic Airshow is to take visitors on a musical journey through Britain's aviation history on Thursday and Friday.

The Essex-based event would feature the Red Devils and a D-Day inspired tribute, organisers said.

Which aircraft will be involved?

A total of 14 displays will take place across the two days in Clacton-on-Sea, with many performed on both Thursday and Friday.

The event has been billed as having a stronger focus on historical planes from the First and Second World War, as well as the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

When and where can I watch it?

The airshow attracts huge crowds to the beach and seafront

Displays are due to run between 14:00 BST and 17:30 on Thursday, and will be followed by the twilight flights from 19:30.

The event is set to resume at 13:00 on Friday, although organisers have said this could change due to unspecified "operational requirements".

It will then conclude at about 16:30.

The aircraft will be visible along the north Essex coastline throughout both days when they take flight.

Visitors have been told a programme of ground events will take place at West Greensward in Clacton-on-Sea.

They can also visit the BBC Essex stage there, where people can have a go at presenting a TV weather forecast.

On Thursday, a free to watch firework display will be held from Clacton Pier.

Police officers will be using live facial recognition technology to monitor those in attendance at the airshow, which regularly attracts 250,000 people.

In a first for Essex Police, the kit will be used to see if people wanted for serious offences are among the crowds.

Assistant Chief Constable Andy Pritchard said it was a "really exciting moment" for the force.

"We’re deploying there to ensure you’re safe if you’re planning to go to the airshow," he said.

Tendring District Council has also secured a High Court injunction to stop all camping in selected areas during the two days.

The open sites covered by the rules involve land on the south side of Marine Parade West from Clacton Pier to Collingwood Road, as well as the Martello Bay area.

Ivan Henderson, Labour councillor on the authority, said it followed "issues with unauthorised encampments" in previous years.
