A seaside airshow that attracts thousands has been given backing for at least the next four years.

Clacton Airshow in Essex will be staging its 31st event on 22-23 August. It regularly attracts 250,000 visitors over its two days.

Tendring District Council's cabinet has agreed to run the show annually until 2027.

Ivan Henderson, council deputy leader, said the decision puts the event on a more sustainable footing.

The council estimated the event is worth £12.2m to the local economy.

Mr Henderson, who is cabinet member for economic growth, regeneration and tourism at the Labour/independent-led council, added: "The economic benefits and the smiles on people's faces as they turn their eyes to the skies, make Clacton Airshow a worthwhile investment.

"By committing to it for four years, instead of annually, means the brilliant team that puts it together can benefit from economies of scale and explore further income options to reduce its cost to the council - safeguarding its future going forward."

The council, which organises the event, has said the decision does not mean the airshow will end in 2027, but it will then become subject to a further review before it continues beyond then.
