Hollywood legend Sir Michael Caine stunned regulars at a pub popular with Army veterans by sending them signed photographs from the 1964 war epic that propelled him to stardom.

The 91-year-old sent pictures from his time filming Zulu in South Africa to the Two Tubs in Bury to thank them for supporting the Royal Fusiliers' local veterans' association.

Sir Michael, who served in the regiment during the Korean War in the 1950s, was told about the pub's support by his chauffeur, whose brother is involved in the Bury group.

Landlady Donna Haslam said everyone at the pub in Greater Manchester was "blown away" by the surprise present, which she described as "the biggest thank you".

The pub, which has a room filled with veterans' photographs of their time in service, hosts weekly hot meals and offers a range of support to former service personnel.

Sir Michael's signed photographs read: "To the Two Tubs, the best pub, thank you for supporting the veterans".

Mike Hall, chairman of the Bury branch of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, said the actor's gift was "fabulous".

"He decided to send them when he heard about what we do for the veterans," he said. "It came out of the blue."

Sir Michael served in the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment), fighting against Chinese forces in the Korean War in 1952.

Bury was home of the former Lancashire Fusiliers - the regiments later amalgamated to form the current Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.

Sir Michael played British Army Lieutenant Gonville Bromhead in Zulu, featuring the 1879 Battle of Rorke's Drift.

Mr Hall said items from that conflict were displayed at The Fusilier Museum in Bury.
