Landfill work has not stopped stink, residents say

Campaigners fighting to stop a stink from a landfill site have said work that has been done by the operators has not solved the problem.

For months, residents of Fleetwood have said the site on Jameson Road has been emitting a rotten egg smell that is so bad it is making them ill, and prompting over 800 complaints to Wyre Council.

The Environment Agency issued an enforcement notice stopping more waste being taken in until work to cap the area was complete.

Transwaste, which has run the site since last year, said work has now been done and it was awaiting an inspection to allow it to continue.

'Still a issue'

They said "there have been no significant odour problems on site" since the work was completed.

Local resident Allison Rowe disagreed and said the smell was still "horrendous".

"The smell is coming in waves and our human rights are being abused every single day that Transwaste are allowed to run this landfill," she said.

"It needs closing, never to be reopened."

Campaigner Jess Brown said: "There is 100% still an issue."

"Wyre Council and the Environment Agency just don't seem to be acting properly."

Transwaste, which has run the site since last year, said work has now been done to stop the smell

The Environment Agency said: "Our priority remains minimising off-site odour issues."

A spokesman added: “We will be inspecting the work that has been carried out as required by the suspension notice and will make a decision on next steps following that inspection.

"We will also be assessing whether any further work needs to be carried out.

“We understand how unpleasant the recent odour issues have been and we are committed to ensuring that Transwaste make the necessary improvements for residents and the environment."

Wyre Council said it was waiting for an update from the EA's inspection.
