A man has died and a woman has been left seriously injured following a fire at flats in Leeds.

Officers were called by fire crews to the maisonette, on Hardrow Road, at about 09:35 GMT, where both people had been found with serious injuries, according to West Yorkshire Police.

The man, in his 60s, who lived in a lower flat, later died as a result of his injuries, while the woman, 68, who lived in an upper flat, was taken to hospital where she remained in a serious but stable condition, a force spokesperson said.

Det Insp Dan Ridgeway said investigations into the cause of the fire had been launched, adding that it was a "very serious and tragic incident".

"Initial inquiries into the cause of the fire are under way, with colleagues from the fire service and emergency services remaining on scene," he said.

"Officers are working to support relatives of those involved and a full investigation of the circumstances of the incident will take place."
