A drink-driver has been jailed for eight weeks after he lost control of his BMW and crashed into a bus shelter.

Harpreet Brar, 27, left the scene near Ralph Butcher Causeway in Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire, but returned when emergency services arrived and claimed to be a passenger of the vehicle.

Brar, of Violet Avenue in Whittlesey, failed a breath test and, after checks, was found to have been banned from driving for three years in August 2024 for drink driving.

On Monday he admitted to driving while disqualified, driving without insurance and drink driving at Peterborough Magistrates' Court.

Brar crashed into the bus shelter in the early hours of 5 January and has been banned from driving until February 2028.

PC Adam Banks, from Cambridgeshire Constabulary, said: "Brar tried to avoid being caught by claiming he was a passenger, but a closer inspection of the inside of the car indicated otherwise.

"He knowingly got behind the wheel during bad weather and while intoxicated, and it is fortunate that no harm was caused to himself or other road users."
