Town centre street's cycling ban could be changed

Cycling was formally banned in Maidenhead's High Street in 2021

A ban on cycling in a town centre's street could be amended in an effort to cut congestion and promote active travel.

The order to not cycle through Maidenhead's High Street was introduced by the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead in 2021 and was renewed last year.

But the council could amend the Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) so cycling is only prohibited between 10:00 and 17:00.

Another cycling ban in Windsor's Peascod Street would be unaffected if the authority's plan is approved next Wednesday.

The council said the "proportionate" change to allow cycling at times in High Street would take into consideration "differences in the footfall, zero gradient and limited night time economy".

But it said it would not allow cycling in Peascod Street because of the "much higher footfall" there and its downhill slope, which it said means cyclists "would find it difficult to manage their speed".
