Overnight diversions will be in place this weekend on the A1 while it is shut in both directions.

The affected section of the road is between Tempsford and the Black Cat roundabout in Bedfordshire.

The closure is to allow for further work on the scheme to upgrade the route between the roundabout and Caxton Gibbet in Cambridgeshire, which got under way in late 2023.

Paul Salmon, senior project manager with National Highways, said that once completed "the upgrades will deliver quicker, safer, and more reliable journeys for motorists across Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire."

This weekend's closures will take place between 21:00 BST and 05:00 BST over three nights, between 19 and 22 September.

Northbound traffic will be diverted off the A1 at Tempsford on to St Neots Road. It will join the A428 at St Neots before rejoining the A1 northbound at the Wyboston junction.

Southbound traffic will use the same diversion route in reverse.

National Highways said it was approaching the halfway stage of the project.
