Cumrbia's hospices are holding special Christmas events to raise money for services

A county's hospice services are hosting two Christmas events to commemorate people who have died.

A Christmas lights switch-on event is set to take place at 16:30 GMT at Eden Valley Hospice in Cumbria, which is also home to children's hospice Jigsaw.

The Light Up a Life event is open to everyone, not just those whose loved ones were cared for in the hospices, with people able to dedicate a light or message to someone at the service in exchange for a donation.

"Light Up a Life is a time to pause, remember, and celebrate those who have touched our lives," Jess Harrington, team lead at the adult in-patient unit at Eden Valley, said.

"Every dedication made helps us provide round-the-clock care for patients and families facing the toughest of times, especially at Christmas, when every moment together is precious."

The hospices will also be hosting a carol service at Carlisle Cathedral at 19:30 on 5 December, where people can also donate to have a message or light dedicated to someone.

Ms Harrington said 80% of the hospice's funding came from donations.

She added: "The community's kindness brings comfort, dignity, and hope to families across Cumbria."
