Plans for new 'leisure marina' and 83 homes in town
- Published
Fresh details have been revealed in plans to create a "leisure marina" and up to 83 homes in a town's former shipyard nearly five years after they were first submitted.
Cheshire West and Chester Council first approved the application for Northwich's Weaver Shipyard off Saxons Lane in 2020 despite local opposition.
But progress stalled over a legal contract which has now been signed, and new plans with more detail have been submitted with a marina facilities building.
The new scheme would also see a mix of house sizes, made up of one bed "cottage flats" and two, three and four bedroom homes. A third of the properties would be classed as "affordable".
Developers H20 Urban – a partnership between The Canal & River Trust and private development company Bloc – said the new structure would "enhance" services for the existing marina business.
They claim it would also support improved mooring opportunities within the marina and along the River Weaver frontage.
A planning statement said: "The site has undergone an extensive design review, involving all relevant parties.
"The result is an attractive residential development, which will positively contribute to the local area, and blend harmoniously with its surroundings."
The scheme had proven controversial in the past with councillors raising concerns about flood risk management, loss of flood plains and the impact on roads.
