England flag painted on crossing for second time

A zebra crossing has been painted for a second time to make it look like a series of England flags.

The crossing in Church Street in Audley, Staffordshire, was first spray painted in August amid a number of similar incidents involving St George's flags in the West Midlands, which included roundabouts being painted and flags hung on lampposts.

Patrick Allen, Staffordshire County Council's cabinet support member for highways north, said it would have to be removed at the expense of the taxpayer, when time and resources allowed.

"We encourage residents to show their love for their country in other ways that do not involve painting the highway, such as flying a flag, if done safely," he added.

Adam Jogee, Labour MP for Newcastle-under-Lyme, said: "People should always feel able to express pride in our country and our flag – that's an important part of who we are.

"I'd encourage anyone who wants to show their pride in our great country to do so; and to do so in a way that doesn't compromise safety or place unnecessary extra costs on local taxpayers."
