Work is expected to start on the redevelopment of a fire station in Surrey next month.

Facilities at Reigate station will be upgraded, and large appliance bays built for the fire engines.

A new kitchen, gym, dormitories and a lounge are also being constructed as part of the work.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service's chief fire officer, Dan Quin, said: “This investment means we can enhance and update our facilities and better serve our communities."

A new separate space for South East Coast Ambulance Service is also being built as part of the project, which includes "cleaner, greener and more sustainable designs", Surrey County Council said.

To facilitate the work, which is being funded by the local authority, the crew and their appliances are temporarily relocating to another building on the site.

The assistant chief fire officer had said the facilities had become "inefficient to operate and maintain".
