A man has fallen down a waterfall popular with people wanting to post pictures on social media.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT) said this was the third callout to the 80ft (25m) Fisher Place Gill in the Lake District this year.

The man had been on the edge of what has become known as "the infinity pool" which had seen a boom in popularity, a spokesperson said.

The man slipped after reaching out his hand to help his partner to the spot, they added.

The accident happened by one of the mountain streams descending from the Helvellyn ridge on Saturday evening, KMRT said.

"Despite there being numerous such pools in the Lake District, this one has seen increased popularity due to social media," a spokesperson said.

Bystanders were able to get the man out of the water at the bottom of the waterfall and on to the stream edge.

He was treated by a crew from the Great North Air Ambulance (GNAAS) who then took him Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary.
