Student painters have helped raise thousands of pounds for a new special educational needs (SEN) learning centre after putting their artwork on display.

The 18 aspiring artists, from One Sixth Form College, in Ipswich, generated £18,000 in donations after their works were exhibited at a gala event in Ipswich Town Hall, external.

The pieces, which were inspired by the theme of connections, saw the students express their creativity across various mediums and explore ideas from interpersonal relationships to social ideologies.

The money raised from the Painting For Change, external initiative will be used to create an outdoor learning space for the college’s supported learning department.

Katie, one of the sixth form students who took part in the initiative, said: “My oil painting uses light to explore the interconnectedness of people.

“I really enjoyed the opportunity to create art that represents my own ideal connections.

“Painting for Change not only gave me the space to express my thoughts on our society but also allowed me to support my college with my talent, which I’m really proud of.”

More than 60 students were invited to contribute to the scheme, which was founded by the Ipswich law firm Ellisons Solicitors, before the best creations were chosen for display.

Jake Robson, the principal of One Sixth Form College, said: “Providing our students with the opportunity to get creative by showcasing their artwork and networking with corporate sponsors cannot be done in the classroom.

“It was really special to see our students receive the recognition they deserve and have the chance to directly support the school's development.

“The funds raised will really go a long way in providing opportunities for students with special needs.”

Ellisons Solicitors donated large canvases and paint to the students as part of the project.

Guy Longhurst, Ellisons Solicitors' managing partner, said: “Throughout our long history Ellisons has always believed in supporting the local community and developing young talent.

"We are grateful to One Sixth Form College for providing us with the opportunity to experience the exceptional talent of the art students who took part in our fundraising initiative."
