Strong winds lead to flight and ferry disruption

Strong winds over the Irish Sea have led to some ferry and flight disruption on the Isle of Man.

The morning’s Loganair flights between the island and Liverpool, Manchester and London Heathrow have been cancelled.

The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company said the 07:15 BST sailing of the fast craft Manannan from Douglas to Liverpool had been scrapped due to the “rapid deterioration in the weather”.

However, flagship ferry Manxman’s return journey to Heysham departed as scheduled at 08:05.

Gusts of up to 50mph (80km/h) were expected to hit the island into the afternoon.

Both the southern and the eastern civic amenity sites were closed for the morning due to high winds leading to dangerous conditions at the facilities.

A yellow weather warning for heavy rain remains in place until midday, however forecasters at Ronaldsway Met Office said due to the recent dry spell of weather on the island “no major issues” with flooding were anticipated.
