Police said Smith’s actions cannot be blamed on his intoxication at the time

A man who went on a rampage smashing cars and demanding money from victims has been jailed for five years and 10 months.

Nathan Smith, 33, wore a balaclava, gloves and carried a machete when he smashed windscreens on Cambridge Crescent, Bassingbourn in Cambridgeshire.

Police said Smith was highly intoxicated and also barged through a garden gate, smashed the glass of a side door and demanded the occupants hand over money.

Smith, of Old North Road, Whaddon, pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary, possession of an offensive weapon, and three counts of criminal damage.

Smith caused the damaged at about 02:40 GMT on 21 November last year.

Police said he used a machete to break the glass of a Citroen Nemo and a Renault Capture parked in the street.

While demanding money from the occupants of a home, he also shattered the kitchen window and leant inside to wave the machete before he left.

He was found by armed officers a short distance from the home asleep on the ground with the machete lying next to him.

Smith also smashed the windscreen vehicle of a Peugeot van parked in Cambridge Crescent

Det Con Zoe Bramley said: “Smith’s actions cannot be blamed on his intoxication at the time.

"His actions demonstrated a level of planning as he was wearing gloves, a balaclava and was wielding a machete.

"He went on a rampage using extreme violence damaging three vehicles in the street before terrorising the occupants of the property he targeted.

“I hope that following this sentence, the victims can now feel safe within their community.”
